I was fortunate enough to have a few teachers inspire me to teach science. I went to a Catholic elementary school and in 5th grade when I switched to Narragansett Pier School. I ould see an immediate difference with the teachers and instruction. At the Pier School and Narragansett High School, I had science teachers who loved their jobs and loved what they teached. Science has always been my favorite class because it interested me and usually came pretty easy to me. My most memorable class in high school was Agriscience with Mrs. Ashworth and Mr.Breene. It was extremely interactive and to this day I can still name the common and latin names of most trees around. In the class we learned about the trees, soil and other environmental factors by talking about them and being outside. We were responsible for taking care of chickens, growing plants in the greenhouse for the plant sale, tapping trees and learning how to run the sugar shack to make maple syrup. This was also a class where the students and teacher had a mutual respect and students were trusted to do things without 24/7 supervision. This was the one class where about 99% of students in the class truly wanted to learn. Another inspiring teacher was Mr. Reis in 10th grade biology. He was so passionate about what he was teaching and made connections with every student. He cared about his students and wanted everyone to succeed. This was my first real interaction with biology as a class and he made it fun to learn, without him, I do not know if I would have a passion to become a biology major.
